What Should You Do After Sending Money to an Online Love Interest?
Stop further payments and contact the bank, card issuer, payment app, wire service, gift-card company, or cryptocurrency exchange immediately through independently verified contact information. Tell the provider the transaction resulted from fraud and ask whether it can be stopped, recalled, disputed, frozen, or flagged. Speed matters, but no private investigator can promise that transferred funds will be recovered.
Stop communicating with the suspected scammer after preserving evidence. Do not pay a new “tax,” “release fee,” “investigator,” hacker, or recovery agent who promises guaranteed reimbursement. Recovery scams often approach people whose losses or contact details have already been circulated.
Preserve the Dating Scam Evidence
Save the dating profile URL, username, platform, profile text, photos, messages with dates and times, phone numbers, email addresses, email headers, payment instructions, bank or wallet destination details, receipts, transaction identifiers, and files received. Keep original message exports and media where possible rather than relying only on cropped screenshots. Write a chronology showing when contact began, when the conversation moved off-platform, each material identity claim, and every request or payment.
Do not keep sending money to create more evidence, access another person's account, or install software the contact recommends. If credentials or identity documents were disclosed, change reused passwords from a trusted device, enable multifactor authentication, and use the FTC's IdentityTheft.gov recovery planner when personal information may be misused.
Report Romance Fraud Through the Right Channels
Notify the dating or social platform so it can preserve and review the account under its procedures. File a report with the Federal Trade Commission and, for internet-enabled fraud, the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center. Provide the transaction identifiers and concise timeline, then keep each complaint number. Contact local law enforcement for theft, threats, stalking, extortion, or immediate safety concerns.
The FTC's romance scam guidance describes the common progression from an online relationship to urgent requests for wires, gift cards, payment apps, or cryptocurrency. A new love interest steering you into a “special” crypto opportunity is also an investment-fraud warning; verify investment professionals and review alerts through the SEC's Investor.gov relationship-investment scam resource.
What an Investigator Can—and Cannot—Do
A lawful scam investigation can organize evidence, compare aliases, usernames, phone numbers, email addresses, domains, images, business claims, public records, and transaction destinations. The report should separate verified facts from associations and unresolved leads so it can be evaluated by counsel, a financial institution, platform, insurer, or law enforcement.
An investigator cannot compel a platform, bank, carrier, or exchange to disclose private records; bypass account security; reverse a blockchain transaction; or guarantee the operator behind an account will be identified. Provider records generally require legal process issued by an authorized party. A public profile match or reused photograph may prove deception without establishing who personally controlled the account.
When a Private Investigation Is Proportionate
Investigation is most useful when there is a meaningful financial loss, continuing threat, civil claim, identifiable U.S. nexus, multiple victims, or a concrete decision that additional facts could change. Before paying for work, ask what questions are answerable with the evidence available, what specialist or legal process may be required, what the phased budget covers, and what form the report will take.
For a new relationship with no payment or threat, begin with the verification steps in our catfishing warning-sign guide. For a loss already incurred, prioritize payment-provider contact and official reporting before commissioning a retrospective attribution investigation.
